Ships ahoy, kids! Meals in the Home provides an opportunity to show a little Hong Kong hospitality to service men and women at anchor in Victoria Harbour. Managed through The American Women’s Association, MITH is open to all U.S. military ships entering Hong Kong and anyone can register to host sailors.
When a fleet is expected in Hong Kong, registered host families are notified. If host families are available to participate they can then submit plans for the sailors to whom they will be matched.
Families can host alone or join up with others. Hosting doesn’t have to be a home-cooked meal; you may want to organize a hike, a tour, or dinner at your favorite restaurant. The choice is up to you; share what your family finds unique about Hong Kong and the sailors are sure to love it too. Host as many or few seamen as you like, the only requirement is that the event be at no cost to the service men and women.
Our children get a lesson in hospitality while supporting those who serve. The sailors are so appreciative!
Families who would like to welcome service men or women in their home for a meal or at an alternative location and activity.
Occasionally, a ship will offer tours, and tickets may be offered to volunteers. However, children under 8 years old are not allowed on the ships. You do not need to be a member of the AWA to participate.
If you’re interested in hosting, register by emailing mealsinthehome@gmail.com for alerts of upcoming ship visits. Ship schedules are sometimes erratic so volunteer opportunities can come up at short notice. You can volunteer as often or as little as you want.
