It’s been a tough start of the year for Hong Kong parents knowing that on-site learning has been postponed once again. Virtual learning is not yet a thing of the past, but at Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong (MCPS), learning and engagement continue through a carefully designed Online Teaching and Learning Program, despite the prolonged pre-school closure.
During the virtual learning journey in 2020, MCPS received very high praise from parents for their 7-Step Online Learning Framework. This encouraged the school to continue with this particular framework over the pre-school closure and winter holidays.
What is the 7-Step Online Learning Framework?
- Pupils are provided with “Live” Zoom Teaching and Learning Sessions by their class teachers in both English and Mandarin, with a focus on the mapped EYFS learning outcomes. All live sessions are recorded and uploaded on Class Dojo – thus can be re-watched multiple times if required.
- All Teaching and Learning Videos are uploaded to Class Dojo – for example, you can find the Forest-Beach School videos there.
- Each group receives developmentally appropriate learning tasks and experiences for the mapped EYFS learning outcomes via Class Dojo.
- Every week the teachers post class newsletters on Class Dojo with a summary of the week’s learning objectives.
- Parents can post learning tasks on Tapestry, their child’s digital portfolio. The teachers can then respond by uploading specific feedback.
- Teachers also provide regular 1-1 Zoom sessions for pupils to support individual welfare and one-on-one instructions, especially for K2 pupils to monitor specific skills like reading, phonics and sight words.
- Malvern College Pre-School Hong Kong also regularly mails home learning packs to their families with “hands-on” resources to support home learning, including home readers and library books.
