Families staying at DB are a lucky bunch. Many of Lantau Island’s most family-friendly trails either begin, end or loop around the bay. Blessed with a picturesque landscape, DB is a favorite with hikers. Hop on the ferry from Central Pier 3, and you too can experience DB’s hiking trails; each at varying degrees of difficulty. Paths reveal abundant flora and fauna and wildlife such as insects, birds, and butterflies. So be sure to slow the pace and enjoy the hike, which can be a hands-on learning experience for you and your little ones. Hiking around DB is perfect during the winter and spring months. Hiking To Rock Pools - Discovery Bay Hikes

For a great way to cool off – try a refreshing splash at DB’s rock pools. A short 15-minute walk takes to you to an oasis of boulders, waterfalls and natural pools, enveloped in greenery. The pools are easy to find. Head towards the bay’s golf club from the ferry pier; then go half-way up Discovery Valley Road before turning right onto a little passage that will lead you to the pools. It’s a comfortable trot for young ones. Best to avoid the weekends as the pools do get a tad crowded and forget the bug spray.
Looking Point - Discovery Bay Hikes

This one-hour hike up to the bay’s lookout point begins opposite the playground next door to SKH Wei Lun Primary School on Discovery Bay Road. A ride on the T4 bus from the terminal will bring you here. Spot a trail entrance off the road, clearly marked by green signage. Your hike starts off steep with huge, unpaved steps 700-meters to the top; best to be tackled by the older kids. Once on top, take in the spectacular views. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy vistas of the bay, Hong Kong Disneyland, and even the Central district. A short descend along the trail takes you to the Lookout Point, complete with a spacious pavilion and a viewing compass. Stretch, hydrate and take in DB’s beautiful landscape. The hike back down is relatively easy, and it’s mostly paved stairs that lead into Parkvale Village. From here, follow the road as it curves towards the pier or opt for the pedestrian stairs down to Discovery Bay Road. Stop to refuel at one of the many restaurants on the waterfront.
Mui Wo - Discovery Bay Hikes

The Discovery Bay – Mui Wo trail is well-paved with concrete pathways, steps, and handrails. This two-hour hike takes you along the old village of Nim Shu Wan, walking past modest houses and vegetable farms; and towards an ascend along a tree-lined path to the peaceful Trappist Haven Monastery. A steep climb after takes you to the very top for views of the forest, nearby islands, the sea, and Hong Kong in the distance; followed by a drop downwards (steep yet safe) onto Mui Wo. Enjoy a leisurely stroll along Mui Wo’s sandy shores and a seafood lunch at the pier. Recommended for families with children aged six and up.
