Visit Jakarta’s Neo-Gothic Style Cathedral With The Kids
Spires, Museum, Antique Organ, And More At Katedral Jakarta
The central Jakarta area is home to many historical landmarks, one of which is the Jakarta cathedral. This neo-gothic structure is located diagonally across the iconic Istiqlal Mosque. Built in the late 19th century, the current building is a replacement structure of an older one that collapsed from wear and tear, due to the weight of the spires on top. With 17-meter high teakwood ceilings, the majestic interior of the building is home to a working antique organ and a Pieta statue. There is a museum in the cathedral complex where you can learn about the history of the Catholic church, open to visitors from Tuesday to Sunday.
After your visit to the cathedral, consider crossing over to the Istiqlal Mosque. They are open to visitors from Saturday to Thursday, and then you can complete your day by crossing over one more time to Taman Lapangan Banteng and snap a picture with the Liberty of Irian Jaya Monument.
