What are cataracts and how will they affect me?
Cataracts are due to the clouding of the normally clear natural lens of your eyes. You may experience blurred or double vision and bright colors may appear duller. You may also experience frequent changes in your glasses prescription. Those with diabetes and on steroid medication are more vulnerable to cataracts. 

What is the treatment?
In the early stages of the disease, you may be able to use prescription glasses to correct your vision. However, when your cataract worsens, cataract surgery is the only way to improve your vision.

What to expect before, during, and after surgery?
First, you’ll need to undergo pre-operative tests to ensure that you are in good health. You’ll then be prescribed eyedrops two days prior to surgery to reduce infection risk. You will be sedated (during the surgery), so there shouldn’t be any pain, just some cold fluid, and pressure. The surgery takes less than 30 minutes but you’ll need to stay in hospital for about four to six hours. Ask someone to drive you home as you may feel drowsy. Post-surgery, you’ll use eyedrops for a month and go for follow-up reviews the next day, one week and about one month later.

What is an intraocular lens?
An intraocular lens implant (IOL) is an artificial, disc-like implant placed inside the eye after cataract surgery that replaces the focusing power of your natural lens.

Which lenses are most suitable for me?

• Monofocal lenses provide clear vision at a single distance as it has only 1 focal point. Most patients will opt for clear vision at distance but there will be a need to wear glasses for intermediate (computer) and near vision.
• Multifocal (MFIOL) or extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs are for distance, intermediate and near. But they have side effects, such as glare and haloes. EDOF IOLs have only one corrective zone and allow for a continuous range of good vision from computer distance to far, and there are usually less glare and fewer haloes as compared to MFIOLs.
• Toric lenses are suitable for patients with astigmatism and will benefit from the implantation of a toric l as it will help to provide sharp unaided vision. Monofocal, multifocal and EDOF IOLs all come with toric options as well.
