HOW TO GET TO MUI WO: Ferry Times + Bus + MTR

You can head to Mui Wo in several ways, from the ferry to catching the bus or taking the MTR.

FERRY: Head to Central Ferry Pier #6 and board either the slow (55 minutes) or fast (35 minutes) ferry to Mui Wo. They run frequently during the day (every 30/40min) with no booking required. Click here to view the ferry schedule.

MTR/BUS: You can also take the MTR to Tung Chung and take the 3M Bus to Mui O. Click here to view the bus schedule.

TAXI: You can also grab a taxi (light blue in Lantau - slightly cheaper too) from Tung Chung Station that will take you to Mui O.

SILVERMINE WATERFALL AND CAVE: Chasing Waterfalls In Hong Kong

If you're looking for some adventure, head to Silvermine Waterfall, one of the city's most easy-to-reach pools. Simply follow the path to the beach and walk along that trail. Take the bridge over the creek, walk past Chinese houses until you get to a narrow footpath, and follow it to the falls.

Make sure to check out the Silvermine Cave, too, located just above the Silvermine Waterfall. You will find an old entrance to a silver and lead mine that closed in 1898, but you can still do some exploring inside. But beware, it is not for the fainthearted, as you may encounter some wild bats on your way in.

SILVERMINE BAY BEACH: Pet-Friendly Beach

Once arrived in Mui Wo, whether by ferry, bus, or cab, you can have a family beach day and head to Silvermine Bay Beach. It's a quick and picturesque 15-minute walk along the coastline from the Mui Wo Ferry Pier or bus terminus.

This large beach comes with lifeguards during the summer months and offers large areas of shallow water, ideal for smaller kiddos. Whether you wish to kayak, paddle or swim, this beach offers endless opportunities for water fun.

Silvermine Bay Beach is also pet-friendly! At the far end of the beach is where you can let your dogs run freely on the white sands and play to their heart's content. Make sure to note that only the slower ferries allow for traveling with your pets, so time yourselves accordingly.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY HIKES IN MUI WO: Easy Hikes For Kids

Lantau Island has a tonne of hiking trails, from family-friendly to pretty challenging. The Mui Wo - Discovery Bay Trail is a popular trek with families, as you will do more walking than hiking on this route. The trail is well-paved with concrete pathways, steps, and handrails.

The 6km trail starts at Mui Wo ferry pier. Follow signs leading to the Trappist Haven Monastery. The trail goes off-road along the water’s edge before arriving on the other side of Discovery Bay at Nim Shue Wan ferry pier.

There’s plenty of flora, fauna, and wildlife, such as colorful butterflies and insects to keep little ones enthralled. Once the hike is completed, you can reward your little munchkins with lunch at a waterfront restaurant along the boardwalk or hit the beach.

MAN MO TEMPLE IN MUI WO:

You might be familiar with the Man Mo temples scattered around Hong Kong, where people praise the god of literature (Man Cheong) and the god of war (Mo Tai). The most popular one resides in Sheung Wan, and just outside of Mui Wo, hidden in the sleepy village of Pak Ngan Heung, is the temple of Man Mo. The Man Mo Temple in Lantau is the smallest but, nonetheless, beautifully adorned with incredible artwork and worth the trip.
